Rabbi Aaron Weininger, Pioneer within Jewish Clergy Leadership, to be Formally Installed in New Role
First Openly Gay Person Appointed as Senior Rabbi by a Large Conservative Jewish Congregation Will Spearhead Movement to Widely Promote Access to Jewish Observance and Day-to-Day Living
Minnetonka, MN (October 11, 2023) – Adath Jeshurun Congregation, a progressive and egalitarian Conservative synagogue, will officially install Rabbi Aaron Weininger as its Senior Rabbi in a series of events beginning November 3, 2023. The Installation is a milestone with both historic and practical implications for the 1,200 member-household congregation and Jews throughout the U.S.
Conservative Judaism strives to enable traditional expressions of Judaism to flourish in fully egalitarian and inclusive settings.
As the first openly gay student admitted to the Jewish Theological Seminary and, with his hiring at Adath Jeshurun in 2012 as the first openly gay rabbi to be appointed at a Conservative synagogue of its size, Rabbi Weininger will now lead the synagogue with a vision of “opening the many doors to Jewish life.”
“When we open the many doors to Jewish life, we encounter a Judaism that doesn’t simply help us be more Jewish, it helps us be more human and more alive in the world,” says Rabbi Weininger.
Adath Jeshurun’s ‘Many Doors’ philosophy and its ongoing commitment to it involves tapping into the passions of current and prospective congregants. The synagogue’s clergy, staff, board, and congregation are focused on creating entry points and meaning that might not have been accessible before to engage a broad spectrum of community.
“Anyone, like me, who at one point was told ‘you don’t belong’ or ‘stay behind that closet door’ should understand that we need them. Just as we needed our entire people leaving slavery in Egypt, we need everyone today,” said Rabbi Weininger. “Jewish life in America is more alive than ever with the proliferation of prayer, Jewish literature, music, learning, social justice, and mindfulness practice. Nothing should stop us from investing in all that Jewish life can be, to help us be more human in the world.”
